June2013
CSR Review Forum
Tomohiko Yamaguchi (Review Supervisor, Cre-en Incorporated)
Sachiko Kishimoto (Director and Secretary General, Center for Public Resources Development)
Jiro Adachi (Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society (JACSES))

In conjunction with the CSR Report Review Forum, a review was conducted on the main topic of lessening environmental impacts on society due to core business activities, following the Environmental Management Action Plan 2017.
The results are as follows.

Outstanding points

  • Regarding contribution to climate change prevention, NEC is highly evaluated on its setting of climate change prevention as a management issue and its declaration to reduce CO2 emitted by society in general through provision of IT solutions, as well as its continued performance that has exceeded plans for 2012.
  • Reviews confirmed that efforts were made to integrate environmental concerns into the drafting of NEC’s 2015 Mid-term Management Plan.
  • We also confirmed the process whereby each business division participates in the drafting of mid-term environmental promotion targets, during which repeated discussions are carried out to raise targets even slightly. NEC is praised on the point that when agreement is reached on a target, the company works together to steadily promote it.
  • NEC is praised on the point of attempting to balance environmental protection and business endeavors through verification trials of an energy management system in the smart community of its Tamagawa Plant.

Points on future expectations

  • Considering performance that exceeds plans for reducing the CO2 emissions of society as a whole through provision of IT solutions, expectations are high for NEC to raise the bar and set targets even higher.
  • The NEC Mid-term Management Plan sets emerging nations in Asia as a key market for environment and energy business. Steady promotion of this goal has the potential to contribute to the reduction of global CO2 emissions. In the future, expectations are high for NEC to work on global targets, including CO2 reduction.
  • The government of Japan supports the Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism. As there is potential for reductions made overseas to be recognized as credits, it is essential to monitor environment and energy policies and make adequate preparations. While NEC carries out outstanding initiatives, issues remain in the realm of information disclosure. For instance, it is unfortunate that the basis for the setting of NEC’s CO2 reduction targets is unknown. Further, it would be effective to establish internal assessment indicators and mechanisms of the Mid-term Management Plan and to reveal these to external parties, or to utilize external auditing institutions as necessary, followed by indication of measurement results. The ideas, approaches and transitions of the NEC Group would no doubt be helpful to other companies, and further efforts should be made to communicate them.
