June 2012
Saburo Kato, Joint Representative, Konoe Fujimura, Joint Representative,
Japan Association of Environment and Society for the 21st Century
The crisis of climate change caused by global warming has increasingly become a reality as witnessed by recent major floods in Thailand and the frequent occurrence of abnormal weather patterns. On the other hand, in Japan, interest in energy problems has arisen since the accidents at a nuclear power plant last year, such as interest in a power shortage caused by the idling of nuclear power plants. Both are important issues affecting the existence of society. Meanwhile, how should the enterprises cope with these crises? These are indeed the important matters that affect the business continuation of the enterprises.
Against this backdrop, NEC steadily produced results in FY 2012 also in an effort to challenge the targets contained in its Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030. More specifically, (1) in the area of making a contribution to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of all of society through IT solutions, in FY 2012, a contribution was made to a reduction of 4.43 million tons in cumulative total (2.31 million tons for a single year) through the "enepal (R) PC Pack," which supports energy-saving countermeasures in offices, and through other means. Additionally, the development of new solutions is making steady progress, including the household energy storage system that has been sold as a new product. NEC is making solid progress toward meeting its target of reducing CO₂ emissions by 15 million tons in FY 2018. (2) Also in terms of the product energy efficiency that indicates energy-saving performance, a 66% improvement was achieved in the weighted average of all products, greatly exceeding the 53% actually achieved in the previous year through an increase in the number of products that are certified as Eco Symbol Star products. (3) In the contribution to biodiversity preservation, 8,032 persons participated in related social contribution activities, greatly surpassing the previous events. (4) Furthermore, in the promotion of resource recycling and conservation activities through the use of bioplastics in major products, bioplastics are additionally used in six product groups including liquid crystal projectors, and a steady progress is made toward the target in FY 2018.
NEC will continue to undertake activities as in the past. NEC is expected to make a great contribution to building a low-carbon society especially when its IT systems and energy storage systems, which are related to environment management that are the result of know-how accumulated by NEC through its business activities, are widely used in society.
At NEC, restructuring of its management is an urgent issue. As a person who has watched the environmental activities of NEC for a long time, it is firmly believed that the continuous use of the environmental technology and know-how possessed by NEC up to the present will not only be a contribution to solving global warming and energy problems, but also be a great weapon as a business strategy. The fact that the feed-in tariff (FIT) system for renewable energy has been implemented in Japan beginning July 2012 will present an opportunity for business especially for NEC, to fully demonstrate its true value. This is because NEC has actively continued to provide excellent products and solutions to society in both energy saving and energy storage. "Training of key environmental management players" and other programs continuously provided by NEC over many years in these scenes as part of human resource development activities will undoubtedly raise the overall environmental power of NEC.
As a global company that is looked upon to be continually aware of the mutual relevance of the environment and energy, NEC has substantially undertaken activities that can contribute to the world and Japan in both "environment and energy." It is hoped that NEC will further gain expertise as a "sustainable company," greatly using its technological and environmental powers surmounting the difficult situation it is encountering at present.
