Masaki Fukui, Senior Vice President

This annual environmental report will be the first one to be issued since NEC announced the NEC Group Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030 in June 2010. During the previous fiscal year, the NEC Group carried out its activities to pave the way for the goals set for 2017 to be accomplished. "Entirely eco-friendly" activities for CO₂ emission reductions by the customers and communities through IT solutions undertaken in the individual segments including offices, logistics and Monozukuri especially have become more vigorous. The environmental and energy businesses that support the realization of a "new energy society" with a focus on cloud computing and storage batteries have started to function steadily as businesses, expanding the contribution through business undertaking.

On the other hand, the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11 and subsequent accident at a nuclear power plant have greatly impacted the business activities of many enterprises including NEC and the set of values and activities of the people. It is imperative to quickly recover and reconstruct from the devastation and to restore safety, peace of mind and well-being to the region. NEC believes that it can offer its contribution to many areas toward these goals.

The Great East Japan Earthquake will also serve as a major turning point for the environmental management of enterprises. In addition to energy saving and environmental friendliness such as natural and renewable energy and storage batteries, an effort must be made to prepare ourselves to think about the mode of energy utilization from the perspective of business continuity also. Furthermore, activities that involve the families of employees and stronger cooperation with the supply chain will become necessary.
NEC believes it is important to continue beefing up its activities toward the realization of the NEC Group Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030 as part of the effort to reconstruct the disaster-stricken areas and to contribute to the building of a sustainable economic infrastructure parallel with the promotion of a contribution toward an "information society friendly to humans and the earth" by the entire NEC Group.
