NEC Working Mothers Salons

Let's talk about "working"! Overview of the salons

"NEC Working Mothers Salons" is a program designed to improve the quality of life for working mothers, operated in cooperation with NPO Madre Bonita, a group of professionals to care for the mind and body of women after childbirth.

Goals of the NEC Working Mothers Salons

Today, the falling birthrate has become a national problem. If the birthrate continues at the present low level and the baby boomer generation retires, then it is predicted that Japan's working age population will fall by 5 million by 2020 (according to the Keidanren).
Because of this social background, the "NEC Working Mothers Salons" are held throughout Japan to achieve the three following goals.

  1. Networking to "nurture together" with the local community
One of the goals of NEC's social contribution activities is to "Actively construct relations with local communities as a good corporate citizen," and we encourage all of our employees to actively take part in local society. Although the foundation of child raising is to "raise children by oneself," it is very important to "nurture children together" with people in the local community. The "NEC Working Mothers Salons" provide women who have become mothers with the opportunity to actively take part in local society, and they help create networks with local people which are indispensable for mothers to continue working while raising children.
  2. A healthy and smooth return to the work place in both mind and body
Since NEC adopted its child-raising leave system in 1990, over 90 percent of mothers who took maternity leave have used this system. By allowing these women to take part during the brief period between giving birth and returning to the work place in the "NEC Working Mothers Salons" which supports them in both the mental and physical aspects so that they can both raise their children and work, these women can return to their work places more smoothly and in better mental and physical condition. Consequently, this system also helps to solve the low birthrate dilemma which has become a problem of national concern.
  3. Improving the "quality of life" of working women
There are many talented women working at NEC in areas such as research and development in the IT field, and it is important for our business to continue to recruit such talented women. At the same time, the lifestyles of women who continue to work while raising children is also changing. Today, there is a trend to emphasize the "quality of life" in which women enjoy raising their children, lead fulfilling lives with their families, and continue with their careers. The "NEC Working Mothers Salons" support the creating of life plans by working women in order to contribute to improving their "quality of life."
