Announcement of MDD2010 Award Winners
All activities reported from worldwide NEC Group companies are reviewed, and The Grand Award, The Ongoing Effort Award, The Creative Plan Award, The Business-Oriented Award, The Biodiversity Award, The Creative Plan Award and the special awards (The Best-Public-Relations Award, and The New-Participant Award) are given to the companies that achieved outstanding results. The winners of each award are selected from both in Japan and overseas (one for in Japan, and one for overseas.) We had a number of 174,478 NEC colleagues and executives (total 153,871 hours) involved in 3,887 different MDD programs at 956 NEC locations in 29 countries around the world. The Grand Award: NEC Tohoku's Forest

NEC Network Products, Ltd. - Ichinoseki Plant (Formerly called NEC Tohoku, Ltd.)
- Activities:
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of NEC Tohoku, Ltd., Iwate Prefecture, the forest owners, and NEC Tohoku, Ltd. concluded an agreement on a 5-year plan for the corporate foresting activities promoted by Iwate Prefecture to improve the mountain forests. Employee volunteers regularly take part in forest preservation. The local newspaper, the “Iwate Nichinichi Shimbun,” devoted much space to this story.
The Ongoing Effort Award: Combined Cleanup by NEC Shonan Technical Center and Oi High School

- Activities:
Employees record on a website what ecological practices that they would like to try on the web, then then carrydo them out, checkmark those they accomplishfinish, and cash in their points. This money is then given by the company to 11 different NPOs that focus on the environment, poverty, and other issues. As of March 2009, 427 employees were participating; in 2008, US$754 was contributed.
The Creative Plan Award: Farming Experience Program for Parents and Children, “Guruguru Farmers”

- Activities:
In collaboration with the NPO RURAL SOCIETY PROJECT, Biglobe provided eight Kuki City elementary school children and their parents with a program to experience everything from soil preparation to harvesting in farmland owned by Biglobe in Kuki City. The participants can check on how their crops are growing through web cameras throughout the year.
The Business-Oriented Award: The Wonder of Science!! “What Can be Done with Radio Technology?” A Presentation at“ Science of the Five Senses” at spff Science Yatai Mura and Other Activities

- Activities:
The company accepted 43 students from Fukushima Prefectural High School, which is designated as a Super Science High School by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and which provides education that emphasizes mathematics and science. The students conducted experiments using radio technology. At the Science Platform in Fukushima Fair, employees in charge of development conducted static electricity experiments for children, held a class about the wonder of electricity and radio waves, and offered a workshop on making a radio set from a kit.
The Biodiversity Award: Biotope Workshop

- Activities:
The company created ponds (biotope areas) where plants, insects, fish, and other creatures can cohabit in more than ten elementary schools, so that children can experience nature first hand, and worked on creating programs for combining classes and nature experiences. This project is a collaboration with the NPO, Asaza Fund.
The Best-Public-Relations Award: Valentine Fundraising

- Activities:
Every February, the company collects from those female members of staff who are willing to make a contribution in lieu of buying chocolate for the men in their workplaces (a Japanese custom).
These contributions are then donated to the Darunee Scholarship Fund via the Shanti Volunteer Association. Each contribution can assist one junior high school student in Cambodia with his or her studies for one year. This year, 14 female employees and 3 male employees, 17 in total, participated in the fundraising, and a total of 12,700 yen was donated. This story was reported by the Asahi Shimbun.
The New-Participant Award: Cleanup activities in and around Toranomon

- Activities:
The company has carried out cleanup activities in and around Toranomon, where the company is located, once a month since May 2010. The activity is done with pleasure in cooperation with the employees of other companies and the local people.

The Grand Award: Teaching People in an Extremely Poor Area How to Make Biogas from the Dung of Cattle

- Activities:
In cooperation with Mitra Tani Farm, a group of biogas experts, NEC Indonesia taught people in an extremely poor area in Bekasi how to make biogas from the dung of cattle. NEC Indonesia also donated the necessary equipment for making biogas to community people. The NEC employees also built a classroom and library for children and community people. Local newspaper “Daily Business Indonesia,” “Seputar Indonesia,” and “The Green Radio” covered the story.
The Ongoing Effort Award: They Need Our Help: The “WaterAid” Charity Appeal

- Activities:
The 6th NEC Group Beijing area tree planting activity was launched on May 8th in the suburbs of Beijing in cooperation with Yanqing Forestry Commission. 5 companies from NEC group took part in this activity, planting 350 trees in total, through the participation of 320 employees and family members. After the tree planting, all joined the family of the exchanges, and the children games.
The Creative Plan Award: Building a Dam to Support HM King Bhumipol's Concerns about the Environment

- Activities:
With a guidance of a local city office, employee volunteers made a small dam in a stream with bamboos and stones. The hand made dam can reduce the risk of a flood in this area in rainy season. Thanks to the dam, various aquatic plants and fishes increase. As the dam eliminates sediments and other pollutants as well, community people can get cleaner water from the stream.
The Creative Plan Award: Mock interviews

- Activities:
NECE supported the participation of the HR team in mock interviews, with the aim of preparing local school students for real job interviews. This activity is always anticipated by the local education community. This is, for the most part, an experience which most students have never had and which many need to develop their skills in. Mock interviews give the students a chance to build up their confidence within a safe environment and a feel for the sorts of questions they will be asked later in life. They also provide an excellent opportunity for employers to practice their interview techniques. An interviewer interviews 6 or 7 students over the course of a day and interviews last around 30 minutes.
The Business-Oriented Award: NEC Electronic Waste Recycling Week

- Activities:
NECARG carried out environmentally-friendly activities through recycling, to collect old or disused cables, boards or electronic equipment both within and outside of the company. Once the materials were collected, NECARG donated them to a local organization: its mission is to employ homeless to recycle or repair and reuse electronic equipment.
The Biodiversity Award: Cleanup at Kranji Marshes

- Activities:
NEC staff gathered to clean up the wildlife vegetation at the Kranji Marshes, created as a result of damming of Sungei Kranji, a tidal river. It is a habitat rich in freshwater wetland wildlife, especially for birdlife that requires more open water spaces, such as herons, bitterns, rails etc, and the Kranji Marshes was adopted by the Nature Society Singapore in 2008 to promote nature education and take ecological care of the park. Regular maintenance and weeding of the park is required to prevent the wetlands from being dried up by the wildlife vegetation. The accumulated mass of vegetation was donated to a local biodynamic organic vegetable farm for composting.
The Best-Public-Relations Award: Composting Center Launch “Tlali-Yolotzin” Jiutepec Morelos

- Activities:
NEC staff volunteered at a local composting center, and also made an observation tour. The composting center turns the organic garbage collected from the city into manure, distributing it to farmers and using it for tree planting. The staff helped pack the compost machine with garbage, crush the garbage, and put manure near the roots of trees. They received words of appreciation from the authorities concerned. A local newspaper devoted much space to this event.
