Eliminating the Digital Divide

NEC Network Safety Classes

The Internet is indispensable as a method of acquiring information from around the world and for communications.
However, because of the tremendous amount of information that is available, there is information that is illegal, information that is harmful to children and information related to Internet crimes.
Furthermore, troubles concerning cell phone dating sites are also on the rise and causing social problems.

NEC has been working with the non-profit organizations (NPOs) Japan Guardian Angels to hold the “NEC Network Safety Classes” for elementary school pupils (middle and higher grades)

These classes aim to introduce children to Internet rules and ethical behavior to prevent them becoming either victims or instigators of Internet crimes, and thereby improve their Internet experiences.

Actual personal computers are used to learn safe Internet practices and ways to enjoy the Internet.

NEC is also involved in Internet safety classes held by The Alliance of Guardian Angels Japan in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture.

Also, in support of the goals of e-netcaravan, (which is made up of members from government departments such as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) NEC sends out instructors to teach a course (worry-free e-net course) to guardians and school personnel on using the Internet confidently and safely.

Comments from Participants

  • This was helpful because I was able to learn Internet rules and etiquette that I did not know.
  • I learned that there are scary parts of the Internet and would like to be more careful.
  • It was fun to actually use e-mail and electronic bulletin boards. If I don't understand something in the future, I'll be sure to ask my father or mother.

Comments from Guardians

  • I think this type of class is very effective because children have a tendency to ignore their parents.
  • I thought it was excellent because the children could understand that the Internet is not just a place to find information, it can also be a dangerous place where bad things happen like losing your important data.
  • I think it was very easy for the children to understand because they actually got the chance to use personal computers.
