HLRS - SX Performance

The SX-8 at HLRS

The leading engineering simulation tool in the world

The SX-8 sustains multiple teraflops in complex engineering applications.

"We selected the SX-8, because it is the only system which allows to sustain mulitple teraflops performance over a range of complex engineering applications." explains Prof. Dr. Michael Resch, the HLRS director. "Commerce and science in Germany have a shared interest in powerful supercomputers, which are becoming more and more important for research and development in the face of international competition," emphasized Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, CEO of Porsche AG.

Engineering simulations have to cope with complex physical models, complicated computational domains and the challenge of stable numerical algorithms. The simulation packages used have been developed by large teams of software engineers over years. Only a balanced computing platform offers performance features tolerant enough to cope with a large variety of algorithms and deliver constantly highest performance.

The SX-8 at HLRS with its 576 high performance vector processors is the unchallenged flagship platform for engineering applications in the world. It is the only platform where a variety of engineering applications all can run with multiple Teraflop/s performance. The pure processing power is embedded in a workflow environment with pre- and postprocesing as well as visualization servers all accessing the same global file system.

The SX-8 has proven to deliver a performance of 5.8 Tflop/s, a staggering 60% of its peak vector performance, in the environment of a familiar engineering workstation. It is this balance of highest floating point performance, unchallenged memory bandwidth, lowest latency and highest bandwidth internode networking and the integration into an engineering workflow environment that make the HLRS such a unique engineering tool.
