Hokkaido Telecommunication Network Co., Inc.Thin Client SolutionAchieving robust data security and flexibility to enable mobile work / Combining Virtual PC Center thin client and VPN systems solves two conflicting challenges
At a glance
Hokkaido Telecommunication Network Co., Inc. (HOTnet), requires a mobile working environment to enable 24 x 365 service and customer response. However for data security concerns, access to the company network from outside the office was restricted to checking e-mail. Employees demanded a working environment with greater flexibility and efficiency. To resolve the situation, HOTnet deployed NEC's thin client remote access solution. Data security for both terminals and the network was ensured while mobile access to the office working environment was also achieved. As a result, the work capabilities of mobile employees have significantly improved and the company is now better able to deliver prompt customer service.
Installation background and issues
- In order to maintain 24-hour support, employees were allowed to check email when away from the office. This access to the company network inhibited the elimination of data security risks – a matter of business survival.
- With only email available, the range of possible work activities in the mobile environment was limited. Remote access to company business application systems was key to reduce the burden on mobile sales professionals who were responsible for responding to customers.
Installation results
- A mobile working environment with access to the Virtual PC Center thin client system over a virtual private network (VPN) tunnel was created. The new system provides reassuring terminal and network security for top management.
- The same office working environment can be accessed from outside the office which expands the range of work and efficiency of the mobile sales force. The new system contributes to prompt customer service.
NEC proposal
- The thin client remote access solution NEC proposed combines a thin client system and a VPN system. The solution delivers data security for both terminals and network while achieving a location-free working environment with full access to the company network.
- NEC's proposal included incremental deployment of the thin client remote access solution, comprising SecureBranch* VPN appliance system and Virtual PC Center thin client system, to meet the customer's schedule.
