Established in 1854, the Met Office in the UK is the world's oldest forecasting organisation. They are relied upon to produce regular daily weather reports - hours and days ahead. The key challenge is the sheer amount of data the scientists are required to analyse: The only way that they can approach a solution to this problem is by using a supercomputer. They needed the fastest and most reliable machine they could find. Situated in brand new premises in Exeter, England, they installed the super fast multi-node NEC SX-8 system as the hub of their forecasting. People all over the UK benefit from the weather forecasts produced by the NEC SX-8. But there is one more area where the supercomputer is used - that is of concern to the whole of the planet. Global Warming.

Climate research helps generate scientific evidence of human induced climate change. The German Climate Research Centre (DKRZ) in Hamburg has acquired a NEC vector supercomputer for this purpose and significantly further expanded its databases using Oracle 9i on Linux. Researchers can simulate severe environmental consequences such as the thawing of glaciers, the rising of sea levels and even the collapse of the Gulf Stream with the new system, which was designed and installed by NEC High Performance Computing Europe. In addition, the centre is now optimally equipped to archive and analyze its research results with a petabyte Oracle database.

The Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum GmbH (DKRZ) recently upgraded its computer systems and became one of Europe's fastest supercomputer facilities in production, used for climate research. They now have the latest supercomputers from NEC, the SX-6 series, a unified data management system, based on the Intel IA-64 (Itanium) architecture and Linux. These elements are the core of the modernization project costing Euro 34 million.
